Teaching philosophy at Pozenatto Piano Studio

Music: a human artistic expression. Music making is a privilege that belongs to human beings, and human beings only. Because of that, I believe that music making belongs to everyone and that everyone should have access to quality music instruction regardless of their ability, age, race, ethnicity, gender, and religion. In my studio, I focus on equitable practices so each student is offered learning opportunities tailored to their individual needs and desires.

Learning: passion and hard work.
A healthy music learning experience involves a balance between passion and hard work, both from the teacher and the student. Through my lessons and classes, students find joy while engaging in meaningful activities that nurture love for music making. Simultaneously, I expect a disciplined practice routine so students achieve their full potential.

Piano: a holistic approach. Many competencies are involved in learning music at the piano, including aural development, reading of music notation, healthy posture and technique, and even improvisation and composition to some extent. In my piano lessons, I offer varied content that include pedagogies from Shinichi Suzuki, Edwin Gordon, and Frances Clark, to name a few. The ideas and pedagogies of these music educators have tailored my education and because of that I feel confident and equipped to deliver a holistic instructional approach to support the formation of not only a total musician but also a well-rounded human being.

Concept-based: a powerful education. The teachings for Frances Clark left a legacy on the piano education of the United States. Central to her philosophy stands an approach to teaching based on concepts. Following this philosophy, I teach my students through musical concepts. The overall curriculum is structured like building blocks where a solid foundation serves as structure of the next building blocks to come. Musical concepts reinforce each other and lead students to the discovery of new concepts, from the known to the unknown, where they participate and take ownership of their learning process.

Parents: the necessary support. An important aspect of any student’s success is parental support. The music educator Shinichi Suzuki firmly believed in the triangle Teacher-Student-Parent as a strong foundation for any learning to take place. I, too, believe that parental support is essential for at home studies and a healthy practice routine, especially at the early stages of music learning. For that reason, I expect that parental support to all of my students.

Values: the ultimate goal. Since I believe that the piano is one of the means of music learning, I also believe that music is one of the possible means of learning important life principles. In my studio, students learn not only piano and music but also respect, discipline, autonomy, and self-awareness. My goal is to guide students in reaching their musical dreams while becoming successful leaders of tomorrow. I am a teacher who believes that the transformative power of music education reaches its full potential when employed beyond the walls of the music classroom.
